RU 486 PETITION UPDATE

Opposing the granting of a licence to Family Planning to

perform medical abortions.

Please pass this email on to others you know of who signed the petition last year.

Chester Borrows, Chair of the Justice and Electoral Select Committee, recently wrote outlining their conclusion regarding our petition.

The Select Committee had invited the Abortion Supervisory Committee (ASC) to make a written submission on the petition. 

The ASC noted:

• The members of the ASC are appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the House of Representatives.
• The high level functions and powers of the ASC are set out in section 14 of the CSA Act.  They include the power to receive, consider, grant and refuse applications for licences, or for the renewal of licences, authorising the performance of abortions in an institution.
• The ASC is the only body with the power to grant, renew or cancel licences.
• There are no specific objection procedures available to the public in relation to the granting by the ASC of a licence to perform abortions.
• Under section 26 a person dissatisfied by a refusal to grant, or cancellation of a licence, can make a case stated to the High Court, but only on a question of law.

In other words, the ASC has absolute power.  The three people on the ASC, appointed under the Act, decide all matters relating to abortion for NZ.

Right to Life have indicated that should Family Planning be granted a licence, they plan to set in motion a judiciary review.  They expect the cost of this to be $15,000+.

• For John Key, who is resisting change.  Pray for revelation about abortion.
• For Right to Life, Ken Orr, their lawyers, for finance, High Court judges.
• For encouragement, direction and wisdom for the next step in the battle.
• For the Family Planning and Waikato District Health Board partnership in gaining a licence to administer RU486 – that a key person will have a revelation of God’s love for His creation and what abortion does to destroy that, and thus be instrumental in waking up these two groups and shifting them from the path they are walking.
